A ventilator is a machine that is used to assist patients in breathing when a patient is unable to breathe properly on his own due to a medical condition. This machine helps the patient in automatically inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide to maintain proper oxygen level in the body.
A breathing tube is inserted into the patient through their nose or mouth and the other end of the tube is connected to the ventilator machine. This tube also restricts the patient to talk or eat. In some cases the breathing tube is inserted directly into the windpipe by making a hole in the front of the neck.
The primary aim of the ventilator is to help the patient in breathing till they are able to breathe on their own. Patients are put on a ventilator due to various reasons mainly due to any respiratory disorder, trauma ,multi organ failure, after surgery, etc. A ventilator has various adjustable settings like the rate of breathing per minute, concentration of oxygen required, etc. which are adjusted as per the patient’s needs.
